Founded
in 1999 by AIA Fellow Barbara Wilks, W Architecture & Landscape Architecture
LLC is an interdisciplinary studio which builds on links between architecture
and landscape architecture to create spaces and buildings that engage
both nature and urbanism. With a civic outlook and an eye for the ecological
and social needs of the 21st Century, our international staff reflects
the firm's holistic outlook on design and brings a variety of experiences,
disciplines and talents to each project. Our office is in New York City,
and we have projects in Europe, Asia, and around the United States. W is organized around the commitment
of Principal Barbara Wilks to quality design and collaboration. With over
30 years experience, she realizes that effective leadership on complex
projects requires vision, technical knowledge and team communication.
The staff of fourteen is organized in a flexible studio manner and includes
experienced project managers, project architects, and landscape architects
who support each project through to its successful completion. Exceptional
CAD and graphic abilities enable the firm to do most work in-house, including
3-D renderings and fly-thrus. At W, our role, through design,
is to create access and a means of participation-a route to discovery
and engagement. In order to engage the visitor in the place, we work to
create designs which solve new problems but honor old histories. We hope
to create a new understanding by revealing these many project layers in
new ways. We seek to foster a greater awareness of each place and its
special qualities by reimagining the boundaries between things,-between
old and new, light and dark, inside and outside, nature and city, revealing
the forces at work. W works closely with each client
and the surrounding stakeholders as appropriate to achieve consensus on
design excellence on the civic scale. The firm has extensive experience
working with building committees, community groups, zoning boards, building
departments, and other governance and approval groups. Our work seeks to engage its visitors. A synthesis of landscape and architectural design facilitates the transition between regional planning, urban infrastructure, public spaces, individual building design, and private landscapes. Projects range in
scale from private homes to educational campuses to entire urban neighborhoods.
Our designs have received top national design awards in architecture,
landscape architecture and urban and regional design, and have been published
in The New York Times, Global Architect, Architectural Record, House Beautiful,
Casabella and other books and periodicals around the world.
